Punjab AIDS Control Program – Free Test, Treatment & Hope
In 1998, the Punjab government started a special program called the Punjab AIDS Control Program (PACP). At that time, HIV was silently spreading among people in Punjab. Many people didn’t even know what HIV or AIDS meant. There was no proper system to detect or treat HIV. People were scared and had no help.
So, the government took a big step and started PACP with these main goals:
- Stop the spread of HIV in Punjab
- Help people get tested on time
- Provide full treatment and support to HIV-positive patients
AIDS Control Program works under the Primary & Secondary Healthcare Department of Punjab. It follows the safety rules and treatment plans from big international health organizations like WHO (World Health Organization), UNAIDS, and UNICEF.
PACP Focuses on Special Groups:
The program works with everyone, but gives special focus to groups who are at high risk of getting HIV:
- IDUs (Injecting Drug Users)
- FSWs (Female Sex Workers)
- MSWs (Male Sex Workers)
- TGSWs (Transgender Sex Workers)
- MSMs (Men who have sex with men)
- And also the general public
These groups often don’t get health support easily, so PACP reaches out to them first.

Real Difference Between HIV and AIDS?

Let’s make this very simple:
- HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus. It attacks the immune system, which keeps you safe from infections.
- AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is what happens if HIV is not treated. It is the last stage where your body can’t fight off even small illnesses.
In Easy Words:
HIV = Virus inside the body
AIDS = When the virus has done big damage to the body
If you get treatment early, you can live a long, healthy life with HIV and never reach AIDS stage.
How Does HIV Spread? And How It Does NOT Spread
Many people have wrong ideas about how HIV spreads. Let’s clear this.
HIV Spreads When:
- Infected blood is shared
- Used syringes or needles are shared
- Unsafe sex happens (without protection)
- A pregnant mother has HIV and doesn’t get treatment
- Tools used in tattoos, dental treatment, etc. are not clean
HIV Does NOT Spread When:
- You shake hands with someone
- You eat or drink with them
- You sit or work with them
- You share a bed
- You kiss (only if no bleeding cuts in mouth)
- Mosquitoes or insects bite you

Knowing the facts can save lives.

Who Should Get an HIV Test?
You should get tested if:
- You had unprotected sex
- You used drugs through injection
- You had a blood transfusion (especially unverified)
- You got a tattoo or dental work done with unclean tools
- You belong to a high-risk group mentioned earlier
The HIV test is:
- Free
- Safe
- Private (confidential)
- Available in your city
Even if you feel fine, testing is important.
How Can You Protect Yourself from HIV/AIDS?
Protecting yourself from HIV is not difficult. You just need some common sense and a little care in daily life. HIV doesn’t come with a warning. You may look and feel healthy, but the virus can still be inside your body. That’s why it’s important to stay safe before it’s too late.
Smart Habits That Can Save Your Life
Always use a new, sealed syringe
- Never use a needle or syringe that was already used by someone else. Use a brand-new one every time.
Avoid unprotected sex
- If the person is not your life partner, always use protection (like a condom). It protects from HIV and many other diseases.
Only take blood from trusted hospitals and certified labs
- Don’t accept blood from local clinics or unknown people. Always ask for HIV-screened blood.
Check tools before tattoos, piercings, or dental treatments
- If the needle or tool is dirty or used on someone else, it can carry HIV. Be careful.
Get your and your partner’s HIV test (especially before marriage)
- This is a smart and respectful step. It’s not about shame — it’s about safety.
Things You Should Never Do

-
Don’t share shaving razors, toothbrushes, or blades with anyone
-
Don’t trust local tattoo artists or dentists unless tools are fully clean
-
Never have unsafe relations with anyone unless you’re 100% sure and protected
-
Don’t use injectable drugs — not even one time, not even with friends
Never compromise on your health. One small mistake can bring lifetime regret.
Protect Your Family Too
-
Ask your life partner to take an HIV test before marriage or pregnancy
-
If you are pregnant, get tested early so your baby stays safe
-
If you work in risky jobs (like hospitals, police, rescue), take regular HIV screenings
Always Remember:
HIV can happen to anyone — rich or poor, young or old, man or woman. It is not limited to a certain group.
Being safe is your personal responsibility. If you care today, your family will be safe tomorrow.
